Quick answer

  • Region: Okinawa Prefecture
  • Main airport: Naha (OKA)
  • Ideal stay: 4 to 7 days
  • Best for: Beaches, diving, culture

Okinawa is a chain of subtropical islands stretching towards Taiwan. For centuries it was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, and its music, architecture and cuisine still feel distinct from mainland Japan.

The main island has history, food and an excellent aquarium, while the outer islands, such as the Kerama, Miyako and Yaeyama groups, offer some of the clearest water and best snorkelling in Asia.

Top things to do in Okinawa

  1. Visit the Churaumi Aquarium. One of the world's largest aquariums, famous for its giant Kuroshio Sea tank with whale sharks and manta rays.
  2. Explore Shuri Castle. The former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its main hall, destroyed by fire in 2019, has been rebuilt and reopens to visitors in late November 2026.
  3. Snorkel the Kerama Islands. Just a short ferry ride from Naha, these islands are known for crystal-clear water, coral reefs and sea turtles.
  4. Walk Kokusai Street in Naha. The capital's lively main street of shops, restaurants and live music, next to the colourful Makishi Public Market.
  5. Cross the bridge to Kouri Island. A long bridge over bright turquoise water leads to a small island with beaches and seafront cafes.
  6. See Cape Manzamo. A grassy clifftop with a rock formation shaped like an elephant's trunk and sweeping ocean views.
  7. Reflect at the Peace Memorial Park. A moving memorial and museum in the south of the island dedicated to those who died in the Battle of Okinawa.
  8. Island-hop to Ishigaki and Miyako. Fly south for white sand beaches, mangrove kayaking and some of Japan's best diving.

When to go

Beach season runs roughly from April to October. The rainy season arrives earlier than on the mainland, usually in May and June, and typhoons are most likely from August to September. Winters are mild, making it a pleasant escape when the rest of Japan is cold.

Getting there and around

Naha Airport has frequent flights from Tokyo, Osaka and other Japanese cities, plus some international routes. In Naha, the Yui Rail monorail links the airport with the city and Shuri Castle. To explore the rest of the main island, renting a car is the easiest option. Ferries and short flights connect the outer islands.

Where to stay

Stay in Naha for a city base with good food, or at a beach resort on the west coast for a relaxed holiday. Spend a few nights on an outer island if snorkelling and beaches are your priority.

What to eat

  • Okinawa soba, thick wheat noodles in a light broth
  • Goya champuru, stir-fried bitter melon with tofu and egg
  • Taco rice, a local fusion favourite
  • Sata andagi, Okinawan doughnuts
  • Awamori, the islands' traditional distilled spirit

Day trips and next stops

From Naha, day trips by ferry to the Kerama Islands are popular. A car makes it easy to combine Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island and Cape Manzamo in one day.
