At the Adachi Museum of Art, the garden is not something you walk in. You look at it, through wide windows and frames, as if it were one more painting in the collection.

Why the garden is a wonder

The founder, Adachi Zenko, believed a garden was a living painting. He shaped dry gardens, a moss garden, a pond garden and a waterfall into views that blend with the real hills beyond.

Gardeners tend it every day, trimming pines and raking gravel so the scene stays perfect. Visitors watch from inside, which keeps it unspoilt.

The art inside

The museum holds a major collection of works by Yokoyama Taikan, a leading painter of modern Japanese style. Only part of it is shown at a time.

There are also galleries of pottery and children's book illustration, plus tea rooms that look out over the garden.

When to go

  • Spring: azaleas and fresh green.
  • Summer: deep green moss and pines.
  • November: red maples across the garden.
  • Winter: snow on the pines, a rare and beautiful sight.

Our tip: Look for the window framed like a hanging scroll. From inside the room, the garden fills it like a painting in a tokonoma alcove.
