Chureito Pagoda: Japan's Most Famous View of Mount Fuji
How to see Chureito Pagoda and Mount Fuji together: the climb, the best seasons and times, getting there and visiting respectfully.
Quick answer
- What it is: a five-storey pagoda in Arakurayama Sengen Park, on a hillside above Fujiyoshida.
- Famous for: the classic view of the red pagoda with Mount Fuji behind it.
- Cost: free, and the park is open at all hours.
- Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours, including the climb of around 400 steps.
- Best time: clear early mornings, especially in cherry blossom and autumn leaf season.
It may be the most famous photograph of Japan: a red five-storey pagoda in the foreground, a snow-capped Mount Fuji behind and, in spring, a froth of pink cherry blossom in between.
Why Chureito Pagoda is a wonder
Few places bring together so many symbols of Japan in a single frame. The pagoda sits on a hillside directly facing Mount Fuji, so on a clear day the mountain appears enormous behind it.
Despite how ancient it looks, the pagoda is relatively young. It was built in the 1960s as a peace memorial honouring people from Fujiyoshida who died in wars.
A view that changed a town
Once social media made the view famous, visitor numbers soared. Fujiyoshida is a small, quiet town, and residents have struggled with crowds, noise and people wandering into private property for photos.
Visiting early, sticking to official paths and being considerate of the neighbourhood helps keep this wonder welcoming for everyone.
The climb
| Stage | What you see | Time (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Shimoyoshida Station | Small local station on the Fuji Kyuko Line | Start |
| Walk to the park | Through a quiet residential area | 10 minutes |
| Sengen Shrine | A shrine at the foot of the steps | Base of the climb |
| Around 400 steps | Steep stone stairs through the trees | 10 to 15 minutes |
| Observation deck | The famous view of the pagoda and Fuji | Top |
When to go
- Early morning: the clearest views of Fuji and the fewest people.
- Cherry blossom season: usually early to mid April, the most famous and most crowded time.
- Autumn: red maple leaves frame the pagoda from late October to mid November.
- Winter: the best chance of a crisp, snow-capped Fuji, with cold mornings.
Our tip: If the stairs feel steep, there is also a gentler sloping path to the top. Allow a little extra time and take it slowly.
Getting there
- By train: take the Fuji Kyuko Line to Shimoyoshida Station, then walk about 10 minutes to the park.
- From Tokyo: highway buses or trains reach the Fujiyoshida area in around 2 hours.
- Combine with: Lake Kawaguchiko, a few stops further along the same line.
Visiting respectfully
- Stay on public roads and paths. Do not enter private gardens or homes for photos.
- Keep noise down in the residential streets, especially early in the morning.
- Take all rubbish home with you.
- Drones are not permitted without proper permission.
