Why Dazaifu Tenmangu is a wonder

The shrine stands over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, a brilliant scholar and statesman who was exiled to Dazaifu and died here in 903. He came to be worshipped as Tenjin, the god of learning.

The main hall is getting its first major rebuild in about 124 years. A striking temporary hall with a forest on its roof stood in front of it from 2023, and worship at the main hall resumed in September 2026.

The flying plum tree

Michizane loved plum trees. Legend says that when he was exiled, his favourite plum tree flew from Kyoto to be with him. It is called Tobiume, and it stands to the right of the main hall.

The shrine grounds have about 6,000 plum trees of some 200 varieties, so the blossom lasts for weeks in late winter.
