Quick answer

  • What it is: a huge seaside flower park on the Pacific coast of Ibaraki Prefecture.
  • Famous for: Miharashi Hill, carpeted in blue nemophila in spring and fluffy red kochia in autumn.
  • Entry: around 450 yen for adults, so check the official site for current prices.
  • Time needed: 2 to 4 hours, or longer if you rent a bicycle.
  • Best time: late April to mid May for nemophila, and early to mid October for red kochia.

Each spring, around four and a half million nemophila flowers turn Miharashi Hill a soft sky blue, until it is hard to tell where the flowers end and the sky begins. Come back in autumn and the same hill glows red with round kochia bushes.

Why Hitachi Seaside Park is a wonder

Nemophila, known in English as baby blue eyes, are tiny, but planted in their millions they create one of Japan's most surreal landscapes.

The park is huge, with cycling paths, woodland, a small amusement area and a giant Ferris wheel. Its gardens are planned so that something is in bloom in almost every season.

A flower calendar

Spring brings daffodils and tulips before the nemophila peak. Summer has zinnias and roses, and in autumn the kochia turn from bright green to deep red.

Kochia bushes are perfectly round and look almost like giant cotton balls. Cosmos flowers often bloom around the same time, adding pink and white to the hill.

When to go

  • Nemophila peak: late April to mid May. Golden Week, from late April to early May, is extremely busy.
  • Kochia peak: early to mid October, when the bushes turn red.
  • Early morning: arrive when the gates open to see Miharashi Hill before the crowds.
  • Weekdays: far calmer than weekends during either peak.

Our tip: Enter by the West Gate and head straight up Miharashi Hill, then rent a bicycle to explore the rest of the park at an easy pace.

Getting there

  • From Tokyo: take a JR limited express on the Joban Line to Katsuta Station, roughly 1.5 hours.
  • From Katsuta: buses run to the park in about 15 minutes. Extra buses usually run during the flower peaks.
  • By car: the park has large car parks, but expect queues at peak weekends.

Visiting respectfully

  • Stay on the paths and do not step into the flower beds for photos.
  • Do not pick flowers or touch the kochia bushes.
  • The park is closed on most Tuesdays, so check the official calendar, which changes during peak seasons.
  • Drones are not allowed without permission.
