Kamikochi: A Car-Free Valley in the Japanese Alps
How to visit Kamikochi in the Northern Alps: the best walks, Kappa-bashi bridge, the season, bus access and wildlife.
Quick answer
- What it is: a high mountain valley in Chubu Sangaku National Park, in the Northern Japanese Alps.
- Famous for: the Hotaka peaks, the clear Azusa River and the Kappa-bashi suspension bridge.
- Season: usually open from mid April to mid November.
- Access: private cars are banned. Visitors arrive by bus or taxi.
- Time needed: one full day, or stay overnight in a mountain hotel.
Kamikochi is a valley of crystal-clear water and tall larches beneath jagged, snow-streaked peaks. Because private cars are not allowed, the only sounds are the river, birds and the footsteps of walkers.
Why Kamikochi is a wonder
The valley sits about 1,500 metres above sea level, surrounded by some of Japan's highest mountains. The Azusa River runs so clear you can see every stone on its bed.
Taisho Pond was formed in 1915, when an eruption of nearby Mount Yakedake dammed the river. Dead trees still stand in its still water.
Easy walks for everyone
Most of the valley floor is flat, with well-made boardwalks and paths. You can walk from Taisho Pond to Kappa-bashi in about an hour.
Keen hikers continue to Myojin Pond and Tokusawa, or use Kamikochi as a base for climbs into the high peaks.

When to go
- Late April to May: snow on the peaks and fresh green leaves.
- Summer: comfortable mountain weather, but busy.
- October: golden larches and red leaves.
- Early morning: mist over the river and fewer visitors.
Our tip: Arrive on the first bus of the day and walk upstream to Myojin Pond before the day-trippers arrive.
Getting there
- From Matsumoto: take the Alpico train to Shin-Shimashima, then a bus, about 1.5 to 2 hours in total.
- From Takayama: buses run via Hirayu Onsen in about 1.5 hours.
- By car: park at Sawando or Hirayu and transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi.
Protecting the valley
- Do not feed wildlife, including the monkeys.
- Bears live in the area, so carry a bell and stay on paths.
- Take all rubbish home with you.
- Check bus times, as the last buses leave in the late afternoon.
