Quick answer

  • What it is: a preserved merchant quarter along a canal in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.
  • Famous for: willow-lined canals, black and white storehouses and the Ohara Museum of Art.
  • Entry: free to walk around. Museums and boat rides have fees.
  • Time needed: half a day.
  • Best time: spring and autumn, or evening when the canal is lit up.

In Kurashiki, willow branches trail over a quiet canal lined with white-walled storehouses. Small boats drift past old merchant homes, and the whole scene feels gentle and timeless.

Why Kurashiki is a wonder

During the Edo period, Kurashiki was a busy trading town where rice and goods were stored and shipped along the canal. Its name means village of storehouses.

The storehouses have distinctive walls of black tiles set in white plaster in a diamond pattern, called namako-kabe. Many now house cafes, shops and small museums.

Art and industry

The Ohara Museum of Art opened in 1930 as the first museum of Western art in Japan. It holds works by El Greco, Monet and Gauguin behind a Greek-style front.

Nearby, Ivy Square is a former cotton mill covered in ivy, now a hotel and shopping area. The region is also known for denim, and you can shop for Japanese jeans in town.
