Lake Kawaguchiko gives one of the best views of Mount Fuji anywhere. On still mornings the mountain is mirrored in the water, framed by cherry trees in spring and red maples in autumn.
Why Kawaguchiko is a wonder
The lake was formed by lava flows from Mount Fuji, which blocked the old river valleys. Today it sits at the foot of the mountain, close enough to fill the whole sky.
The north shore faces Fuji directly, which is why most viewpoints and hotels are there.
Viewpoints around the lake
Oishi Park on the north shore has flower beds with Fuji behind them. The Kachi Kachi Ropeway rises to a lookout over the lake and the mountain.
The famous Chureito Pagoda, our wonder number 10, is a short train ride away in Fujiyoshida.
