Lake Toya was born from a huge eruption around 110,000 years ago. Today it is a calm, round lake ringed by hot spring hotels, with a smoking volcano on its southern shore.
Why Lake Toya is a wonder
The lake almost never freezes, even in Hokkaido's hard winter. Nakajima, a cluster of islands in its middle, is home to wild deer.
Mount Usu, on the south shore, has erupted several times in the past century. In 1943 a new mountain, Showa Shinzan, rose out of a wheat field.
Fireworks over the water
From late April to October, a boat sets off a short fireworks show over the lake every evening. Many hotels have rooms facing the water.
The fireworks last around 20 minutes and can be seen from the lakeside path, from boats or from your onsen bath.
