Twice a day, the tide rushes through the narrow Naruto Strait between two seas. The water churns into swirling whirlpools, while sightseeing boats edge as close as they dare.

Why the whirlpools are a wonder

The difference in water level between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean creates fast currents through the narrow strait. Where fast and slow water meet, whirlpools form.

At spring tides, around full and new moons, they grow largest, and the currents are among the fastest in the world.

Above and on the water

Uzu-no-Michi is a walkway built inside the Onaruto Bridge, about 45 metres above the sea, with glass floor panels for looking straight down at the whirlpools.

Sightseeing boats offer a closer view, rocking through the swirling water beside the bridge.
