Quick answer

  • What it is: a 14 km mountain stream flowing from Lake Towada through forest in Aomori Prefecture.
  • Famous for: mossy rocks, rapids, waterfalls and some of Japan's best autumn leaves.
  • Entry: free, with a riverside walking path along most of the stream.
  • Time needed: 2 to 3 hours for the best section, or about 5 hours for the full trail.
  • Best time: mid to late October for autumn leaves, or June for fresh green moss.

The Oirase stream tumbles out of Lake Towada and runs through a deep forest of beech and maple. Its walking path stays right beside the water, past mossy boulders, rapids and more than a dozen waterfalls.

Why Oirase Gorge is a wonder

Oirase is protected as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument. The water is so clear and the moss so thick that the whole valley feels alive.

Because the path runs so close to the stream, you are never far from the sound of water. Every turn brings a new view.

Waterfalls and rapids

Ashura no Nagare is the most photographed spot, where the water churns around rocks under the trees. Further upstream, Kumoi Falls drops in a single long ribbon.

At the top, Choshi Otaki is a wide waterfall that blocks fish from swimming up into Lake Towada, which is why the lake once had no fish.

When to go

  • Autumn: fiery leaves from mid to late October.
  • June: bright green moss and new leaves.
  • Summer: cool forest shade and fewer crowds than autumn.
  • Winter: icicles and frozen waterfalls on special tours.

Our tip: Walk the middle section between Ishigedo and Choshi Otaki. It has the best rapids and waterfalls, and buses stop at several points along the way if you get tired.

Getting there

  • From Aomori or Hachinohe: seasonal JR buses run to the Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada.
  • From Tokyo: take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Hachinohe or Shin-Aomori, then a bus.
  • Along the stream: buses stop at several points, so you can walk one way and ride back.

Walking tips

  • Stay on the path and do not step on the moss.
  • Walk on the path, not the road, as traffic is heavy in autumn.
  • Carry rain gear, as the weather changes quickly.
  • Check bus times, as services are seasonal.
