Quick answer

  • What it is: a large Edo era strolling garden in Takamatsu on the island of Shikoku.
  • Famous for: hundreds of carefully pruned pines, ponds and the Kikugetsu-tei teahouse.
  • Size: one of the largest historic gardens in Japan, set against Mount Shiun.
  • Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Best time: any season, but especially spring and late November.

Ritsurin Garden unfolds like a scroll painting, with a new view around every corner: pines shaped over centuries, little bridges, and teahouses reflected in still ponds, all backed by a wooded mountain.

Why Ritsurin is a wonder

The garden was developed over more than a century by the lords of Takamatsu in the Edo period. Its six ponds and thirteen artificial hills are arranged to reveal different scenes as you walk.

Gardeners still prune the pines by hand. Some trees have been shaped for hundreds of years into sweeping forms.

Tea and boats

Kikugetsu-tei, a teahouse whose name means scooping the moon, offers matcha and sweets overlooking the pond.

Traditional wooden boats glide across the South Pond, giving a view of the garden from the water.
