Takayama: Old Merchant Streets in the Japanese Alps
How to visit Takayama's old town: the Sanmachi merchant streets, morning markets, sake breweries, the Takayama Festival and getting there.
Quick answer
- What it is: a historic mountain town in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture.
- Famous for: the Sanmachi district of Edo era merchant houses, morning markets and Hida beef.
- Festivals: the Takayama Festival in April and October, with ornate floats.
- Time needed: one full day, or two with a visit to Shirakawa-go.
- Best time: spring and autumn festival days, or winter for snowy streets.
High in the mountains of central Japan, Takayama kept much of its old character. Lanes of dark wooden merchant houses, sake breweries marked by balls of cedar, and riverside morning markets make it feel like a step back in time.
Why Takayama is a wonder
Isolated by mountains, Takayama developed its own culture and skilled carpenters, known as the craftsmen of Hida. The Sanmachi district preserves streets of merchant houses from the Edo period.
Takayama Jinya, the old government office, is a rare survivor of its kind from the Edo period. Its tatami rooms and storehouses show how the region was run for the shogun.
Markets, sake and floats
Two morning markets set up each day, one along the Miyagawa River and one in front of Takayama Jinya. Farmers sell vegetables, pickles and local crafts.
Look for a ball of cedar leaves hanging above a doorway. It marks a sake brewery, and many offer tastings. During the Takayama Festival, towering floats decorated with carvings and puppets parade through the streets.

- Winter: snow on the old rooftops and fewer visitors.
- Early morning: the morning markets and quiet streets before day-trippers arrive.
Our tip: Try Hida beef in the old town, whether grilled on a skewer or served as sushi on a cracker. It is one of Japan's finest wagyu.
