Taketomi is one of the best preserved villages in Okinawa. Its sandy lanes, coral walls and red roofs guarded by shisa lion dogs make it feel like old Ryukyu still lives here.
Why Taketomi is a wonder
The islanders have protected their village with strict rules. New buildings follow the old style, with red tiles, low walls and hibiscus hedges.
Water buffalo pull carts slowly through the lanes while the driver plays the sanshin and sings island songs.
Beaches and star sand
Kondoi beach has shallow, very clear water, perfect for paddling. Kaiji beach is known for star sand, tiny star-shaped shells.
Please do not take sand, shells or coral home. They are part of a fragile island and its national park.
