Quick answer

  • What it is: a 333 metre communications and observation tower, completed in 1958.
  • Famous for: its orange and white colours and night illuminations.
  • Decks: the Main Deck at 150 metres and the Top Deck at 250 metres.
  • Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours.
  • Best time: around sunset, or after dark when it is lit up.

Tokyo Tower rose over a city still rebuilding after the war. Painted bright orange and white, it became a symbol of hope and modern Japan, and it still glows over central Tokyo every night.

Why Tokyo Tower is a wonder

When it opened in 1958, Tokyo Tower was taller than the Eiffel Tower, which inspired its design. Its colours are required for aviation safety.

Although Tokyo Skytree is now taller, Tokyo Tower remains a favourite, with closer views of the city centre and the bay.

Views and lights

The Main Deck has wide windows and glass floor panels. Guided Top Deck tours climb to 250 metres, where mirrors and lights create a futuristic space.

At night, the tower is lit in warm orange or special colours for events and seasons.
