Enoshima is a green island of shrines, steep stairs and seafood stalls, about an hour from Tokyo. On clear evenings, Mount Fuji appears across the bay as the sun goes down.

Why Enoshima is a wonder

The island has been sacred for centuries. Enoshima Shrine is made of three shrines, each honouring a sea goddess, with Benzaiten as the most famous.

At the far end, the Iwaya caves were carved by waves. Candle-lit paths lead deep into the rock.

Food and views

The lane up from the bridge is lined with shops selling shirasu, tiny whitebait served on rice. Crispy pressed octopus crackers are another local snack.

The Enoshima Sea Candle lighthouse tower gives views over Sagami Bay and, on clear days, Mount Fuji.

When to go

  • December to February: clear air and Fuji views.
  • Summer: beaches and crowds on the coast.
  • Winter evenings: the Sea Candle light-up.
  • Weekdays: fewer people on the stairs.

Our tip: Ride the Enoden train from Kamakura. The old coastal line runs between houses and along the sea, and links Enoshima with Kamakura's temples.

Getting there

  • From Shinjuku: about 1 hour 10 minutes on the Odakyu Line to Katase-Enoshima.
  • From Kamakura: about 25 minutes on the Enoden Line to Enoshima Station.
  • From the stations: about 15 minutes on foot to the island.

Visiting tips

  • Wear good shoes, as the island has many stairs.
  • The paid Enoshima Escar escalators help on the way up.
  • Watch out for black kites. They swoop down to grab food.
  • Check the Iwaya caves for closures in rough weather.
