Quick answer

  • What it is: a historic port town near Sapporo, built around a canal lined with old warehouses.
  • Famous for: its canal at dusk, glass workshops, music boxes and fresh sushi.
  • Entry: free to walk along the canal.
  • Time needed: half a day or a full day trip from Sapporo.
  • Best time: dusk, when the gas lamps light up, or February for the Snow Light Path.

When the gas lamps flicker on along Otaru Canal, the old stone warehouses glow gold in the water. A century ago this was one of Hokkaido's busiest ports, and its handsome buildings still tell that story.

Why Otaru is a wonder

Otaru boomed in the late 1800s and early 1900s as Hokkaido's trading gateway. The canal was finished in 1923 so barges could carry goods between ships and warehouses.

When trade moved elsewhere, the canal was partly filled in for a road. Local residents campaigned to save the rest, and the restored section is now the heart of the town.

Glass, music boxes and sushi

Otaru is famous for glass. Old herring fishing floats were once made here, and today the Sakaimachi shopping street is full of glass shops and workshops.

The Otaru Music Box Museum, with its steam clock outside, holds thousands of music boxes. Finish with sushi on Sushiya-dori, where the fish comes straight from local waters.
