Takachiho Gorge: Rowing Beneath a Waterfall in Mythical Kyushu
How to visit Takachiho Gorge: rowing boats under Manai Falls, the riverside walk, the myths of the sun goddess and how to get there.
Quick answer
- What it is: a narrow river gorge with sheer cliffs of volcanic rock in the mountains of Miyazaki.
- Famous for: rowing boats on emerald water beneath the Manai Falls.
- Legends: the town is linked to some of Japan's oldest myths about the sun goddess Amaterasu.
- Time needed: half a day for the gorge, or a night to see the kagura dance.
- Best time: spring and autumn, ideally on a weekday morning.
In Takachiho Gorge, walls of columnar rock rise from a jade-green river and a waterfall pours from the forest above. Rowing a small boat right beneath it is one of the most magical experiences in Kyushu.
Why Takachiho Gorge is a wonder
The gorge was formed by lava from ancient eruptions of Mount Aso, which cooled into columns and was later carved by the Gokase River. The cliffs rise high above the water, with the Manai Falls tumbling down from the edge.
A riverside path runs along the rim, with bridges and viewpoints, while boats let you explore the gorge from below.
The land of the gods
Takachiho is woven into Japan's founding myths. Nearby Amano Iwato Shrine honours the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to have hidden, plunging the world into darkness, until the other gods lured her out with a dance.
That dance lives on in kagura, sacred performances held at Takachiho Shrine every evening, and in all-night village performances in winter.

When to go
- Spring and autumn: fresh greenery or autumn leaves, and comfortable walking weather.
- Summer: the waterfall is often lit up in the evenings.
- Weekday mornings: shorter waits for the boats.
- After heavy rain: boats may stop running when the river is high.
Our tip: Boats are very popular and booking ahead is now recommended. If they are full, the walking path still gives superb views of the falls.
Getting there
- From Kumamoto: highway buses reach Takachiho in around 3 hours, or drive through the Aso area.
- From Nobeoka: local buses take about 1.5 hours.
