Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: Through the Snow Walls
How to travel the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: the towering snow walls, Kurobe Dam, the six ways to cross the Alps and the best season.
Quick answer
- What it is: a mountain route across the Northern Alps between Toyama and Nagano, using cable cars, buses and a ropeway.
- Famous for: the Yuki-no-Otani snow walls and the huge Kurobe Dam.
- Season: usually mid April to late November. It is closed in winter.
- Time needed: one full day to cross.
- Best time: late April to May for the snow walls.
In spring, buses on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route drive through a canyon of snow, with white walls rising high on either side. It is one of the most unusual journeys in Japan.
Why the Alpine Route is a wonder
The route climbs to Murodo, about 2,450 metres above sea level, where heavy winter snow is cleared each spring to open the road. The cleared walls can reach nearly 20 metres.
On the Nagano side, Kurobe Dam is the tallest dam in Japan at 186 metres. From late June to mid October, it releases a thundering spray of water for visitors.
Six ways to cross
The full route uses a cable car, a highland bus, a tunnel bus, a ropeway, another cable car and a final tunnel bus.
Each stage has its own views, from beech forest to alpine meadows and the turquoise Kurobe Lake.
The route from Toyama
| Stage | What you see | Time (approx.) |
